Open Source Project: Crank

After reading The ASP.NET Anthology I was inspired to try out SubSonic. I liked it but I didn't have a data model just lying around to play with. I could get massive productivity gains once I had a database, why couldn't I generate the database too.

I had a look around and I came across the Liftoff plug-in for Rails. It uses a language called CAL (Compact Association Language) to generate Rails domain models. It looked cool but not quite what I needed.

And so Crank was born. Crank is a tool for generating SQL from a description of the domain. The description is given in a language which I am still calling CAL (although it's a little different to the version in Liftoff).

CAL looks like this:

Customers <{MadeBy} Orders <>{LineItems} Products

The code inside the tool is a mess (I'm working on it) but the tool does actually work currently. If you think this idea is worth pursuing or if you just want to try it out check out the CodePlex site for Crank.
