Recently, I have discovered RSS (or feeds in general anyway). Don't get me wrong, intellectually I was always aware of RSS, but now I actually subscribe to many feeds.
It started by downloading RSS Bandit. I cleared out the default feeds and added a few that I regularly read anyway. But then, it wasn't enough.
In a few short hours, I had read everything that there was in the feeds I had subscribed to. I had to find more. I found the the site share.opml.org which was good. I found Scott Hanselmans Blog Roll for 2006 which was better.
But then I started to realise something. Having RSS Bandit open while I was at work was seriously destroying my productivity. Just like having MSN Messenger open all of the time, but it is far more insidious.
Why? Because when a new feed item arrives you read it. If it looks interesting you might read the comments. If it's got links in it you open them. At this point you are so far off what you were doing a few minutes ago that you might as well forget about it and scrub the hour.
I have now switched off RSS Bandit and I open it at lunchtime and when I go home. But it is making me sweat nervously and look around wide-eyed and twitching uncontrollably. I seem to remember all of this from when I gave up smoking, and I'm not looking forward to when I give up caffeine (any day now I promise).
